Inspiration for Garage Years...
The year is 1988, I'm an 8-year old snot nose kid sitting in the back of the school bus with my yellow sport Walkman, listening to my sisters Def Leppard "Hysteria" tape that I had stolen from her that morning. An older middle school kid jerks my headphones off and aggressively asks, "What are you listening to?!" When I answer the look on his face is one I will never forget. It was like he wanted to punch me, but also teach me at the same time. "Here, kid! Take this tape home, make a copy, and bring it back tomorrow!!"
That tape was the Metallica "$5.98 E.P. Garage Days Re-Revisited" and it changed my fucking life forever by introducing me to The Misfits and punk rock. I ran out that weekend and purchased a copy of The Misfits "Earth A.D." tape with quarters that I had stolen from my dad's change tray.
At this point I knew Metallica well since my cousin Travis had given me a stolen copy of "Kill Em All" when I was 5 years old. Also, my first concert was the "Master Of Puppets" tour at the Civic Center in Charleston, WV when I was just 7 years old. This was also thanks to Travis, who was already a teenage drug addict at that point, but pretty kick ass first concert, right?
I've always wanted to put together a Metallica tribute album, so when the time finally came I knew the music needed to be a punk rock tribute to early Metallica, with cover art that incorporated my love of the Garage Days and Earth A.D. layouts.
Hope you all enjoy the music and the artwork.
